UYC Mission
United Youth Council’s Mission is to:
  1. Promote the interest of urban youth throughout America and the world.
  2. Recruit youth and supporters to become involved in the organization – activities, and social causes.
  3. Develop, create and broaden the educational, political, cultural, social, spiritual and economic perspectives of youth.
  4. Raise the consciousness of the community at large toward a greater understanding and appreciation for human diversity.
  5. Advocate for human rights to help in securing a better future for youth, family and community at large.
  6. Network and affiliate with other groups locally, nationally and internationally whose purpose is to promote, and advocate for a better future for our youth
UYC offer programs and advocate for summer youth employment, after school activities, cultural and arts activities, counseling and recreational programs.
UYC History
Salaam Ismial organized the UYC after major confrontations with street “gang” rivalry in 1982.
United Youth Council Incorporated (UYC Inc.) became a nonprofit tax-exempt 501-C3 agency based in the city of
Elizabeth New Jersey that has provided a broad range of youth and family services for over 25 years.
UYC was incorporated in 1985 to address the problems of urban youth and their family concerns . concerns.
UYC Inc. is affiliated with over 30 community groups and served thousands of youth and their families throughout the greater New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania area. Over the past 25 years it has operated numerous programs including summer youth employment, after school tutoring, cultural and arts activities, counseling, recreational programs,anti-drug campaign, a youth exchange program, teen pregnancy prevention workshops, male mentoring, AIDS awareness, street “Gang” intervention, campaign against car theft, and human rights advocacy.
UYC Recognition
Efforts of the United Youth Council Inc. have been recognized locally and nationally. Numerous news articles and editorials have been written in the former DAILY JOURNAL, STAR LEDGER, BERGEN RECORD, NY TIMES and other publications around the country. Proclamations received by former NJ Governor Thomas Kean, former NJ Governor James McGreevey, Union County Board of Freeholders, Elizabeth City Council and Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage acknowledging the worthy efforts of the organization.
Other prominent individuals and groups such as former Senator Bill Bradley, former congressman Matthew Ronaldo, Former First Lady Nancy Reagan, NAACP, National Council of Negro Women have given special recognition and awards to UYC.
UYC National
The United Youth Council is incorporated in New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Washington D.C; and establishing chapters in Florida, Georgia, Texas, California, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Texas and California.
Salaam Ismial has over 25 years of advocating for human rights, youth, family and community concerns and is a sought after speaker and organizer from around the country.
Salaam Ismial organized the UYC (formerly Elizabeth Youth Council) after major confrontations with street gang rivalry in 1982. Ismial created a philosophy of “discussion and not destruction”
Over 100 of Elizabeth and Newark New Jersey area gangs met with Salaam Ismial and he found most them wanted love and attention. By convincing the leaders of the gangs to get involved in some positive activities helped to bring many involved in the organization.
Ismial said the way to reach them is to talk their language and understand their way even if you disagree. “The point is to reach whom you can and to realize there are some that will not be reached.”
